Inspiration can come in many ways, sometimes it
pops into my head and other times it’s inspired by events or people around me.
One thing that I try to use in any book I write, is psychology. I like how
behaviours can play a huge role in people’s lives and how they allow events to
shape who they are as people. Another aspect that I like to use in my writing,
is reality. I find that, although I love fantasy and imagination, I find that
characters can feel more relatable if they are closer to reality. What I mean
is that I do love romance, but the reality of life means traumas, hardships,
and challenges that each character must face. In this book, I was inspired to
write about a pirate, because an avid romance novel reader once told me that
she had read many novels with a male pirate hero, but never with the roles
being switched and it being the female the pirate. I thought about it and the
idea of Sam, my lead character of the book, was born. As I developed this
character, I thought of what it would really be like a female living in a
pirate world, the hardships and challenges she would have to face and
incorporated this into my book. In the end, even though my character Sam was to
have some vulnerable points in the book, I wanted this character to be strong
because of the challenges in her life. In my writing, one could say, that it’s
all about the characters. I love characters that are relatable and feel real.
To me what makes or breaks a book is the characters and it is the creation of
those characters that encouraged the story to progress.
